The Truth About Small Business Finances
Before we dive into why six figures isn’t the end-all-be-all, let’s look at some statistics:
The average revenue for small businesses with no employees is $46,978 per year
86.3% of small business owners make less than $100K annually
82% of businesses that fail cite lack of cash flow as the main reason
If you’ve been struggling to hit six figures, you’re not alone. But even when you do reach that milestone, the financial reality might surprise you.
Breaking Down the Math
Let’s assume you generate $100,000 in revenue. With an average small business profit margin of around 50%, that leaves you with $50,000 in profit. After taxes (around 22%), your take-home pay is roughly $39,000 per year, or $3,250 per month.
If you’re working a 40-hour workweek, that equates to about $18.75 per hour—which is comparable to many hourly jobs. The difference? You’re responsible for everything in your business, from marketing to client work to operations.
Why Six Figures Isn’t Life-Changing
Many coaches and marketers sell the idea that reaching six figures means you’ve “made it.” But in reality:
$100K in revenue ≠ $100K in income
Financial stability comes from consistency and scalability, not just revenue milestones
Your business should be designed to support your lifestyle, not just chase an arbitrary number
Hitting six figures is a great milestone, but it’s just the beginning of building a truly sustainable and profitable business.
The Real Reason We Build Businesses
While financial success is important, many of us started our businesses for freedom and flexibility. For me, that meant creating a business that allows me to work on my own terms, be present for my kids, and support my military spouse lifestyle.
Success isn’t just about money—it’s about designing a business that aligns with your values and lifestyle.
